I have several cameras from past purchases and always went with the cheaper 1/4" CCD and 420 lines of resolution. They don't even come close to comparing to this 1/3" and 480 lines! The night vision is much better than any other I have purchases as well. Very solid! Definitely worth the extra $$$ over the 1/4" equivalents...

This camera is definitely superior over all others I've seen in quality.

There is a BNC female connector on the back plate (male BNC adapters for RCA cables are available at Radio Shack, as is the 12v power converter. Save more money and time. Positive polarity.)

I noticed the camera rattling and loose inside. If your camera begins to rattle, open up the back plate and carefully remove the whole assembly - with the plate-attached metal stair-step stand that supports the camera. You can adjust the stand by twisting any loose columns. But be careful not to unfocus the camera.

Do not try to open the front of the camera, unless you absolutely have no choice - like to replace the IR ring!

The IR ring (infra-red led lights attached to a curcuit board) is held in place separately in the front of the camera with a small white pin connector with wire leads to the camera board. This is convenient because when the IR leds may burn out after a few years, you can just disconnect and replace the ring for cheap.

The sun shade slides only if the front and back end screws are loosened. At the top-back of the camera, there are 2 built-in screw fittings that confused me at first. (Be sure to refer to the picture here that shows how the wall connector is put together, or you will become frustrated since there are no instructions or diagrams on how to use the supplied hardware.) Do not try to move the angle of the shade, since the only way it moves is from front to back on slides.

The reason this or most surveillance cameras on the market today do not have any audio is because the public privacy law has changed to make eavesdropping illegal in many states. But if you are so inclined, find mini-microphones, transmitters and receivers on the hobby shop sites selling motorized airplanes that employ digital cameras. You might find better prices for mini-box color cameras as well with portable power supplies.

Note: Found this camera (54-IR leds) for $50 cheaper on Amazon - do a search on 1/3" Sony CCD Long range 54 IR Camera with 16mm Lens IR80P 1DT.

Enjoy!

Anyone serious about putting in a home surveillance system should definitely consider these cameras. I would also like to point out that we've had some pretty heavy rainfall that the cameras were exposed to. They are every bit as weather proof as advertised. A must buy!

But I was very wrong. My driveway is about 40 wide and about 150 long and this camera sees clearly the hole driveway plus accross the street. it took me about 3 hours to hook it up to my mount it to the house and hide the wires. Very easy to connect to the tv. No instructions though. Plugged the camera to my 42 inch plasma and the picture quality is fantastic.Way better then I thought it would be. I have a First Alert security system. It's inexpensive but works great. The camera that came with it was OK but marginal. I researched many cameras and this one came with high praise. It deserves it. I could not have been happier. The only slight downside is that the IR lights can wash out the subject when they are about 15 feet or closer away. I covered the lights with a disc of smoke colored plastic. It helped a lot. I am thrilled with this camera..

I have bought 2 of these cameras with 2 more on order upgrading my old radio shack ones I got years ago that have only 330 tv lines of resolution. These cameras for the price are definatley a BIG step up from what I had. My old cameras would go dark at certain times of the day when the shadows from the trees would come, and I had no night vision, I could only see headlights, and porch and street lights. With these new Q-see cameras I have full clear vision all day, and I can see clear to the street at night which is about 50ft! I can see what kind of car is driving by at night instead of just someones headlights I love it!
This was the most camera I could afford on my budget. The camera is bigger than my old ones and you can see IR's lit up at night which might attract attention if your trying to be more discret, its not really too noticeable unless your looking straight on the camera. I don't care if someone see's, them then maybe they will think twice about invading my space.
Thats what the cameras are for right? The mount is kinda big compared to others, but its very sturdy, and you have a very wide range of motion at which to set it at. Where I live it gets windy, and they hold in place nicely. I am real happy I got these, and I getting much more out of my security system, than I was with my old Radio Shack cameras. I use these just for their audio circuit now. Free shipping was sweet also. Hope this helps

Update 12-20-2008: This camera has been running flawlessly except for mother nature. It seems that spiders like the infrared light at night (I'm not an insect person but I know some insects can see IR light). As a result they tend to make webs over the lit area at night. The spider being so close to the camera looks like you are being robbed by king kong to your DVR and thus makes all night tapes of spider web weaving which are fun to watch in 16X speed but the reality is you must clean the lens once a month to maintain good night vision. Daytime it is not a problem.

Update 5-15-2008: This particular camera has been running for about 2 months now and faces the street where we have had a drug problem. Last night it caught the evicted drug dealer breaking into his old house to retreive forgotten property when the police escorted him out the first time. Since our neighborhood watch had been warned that the home should be vacant I noticed the movement across the street, called 911, and 2 minutes later the former problem was cuffed and stuffed into the squadcar for criminal trespass, possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, violation of a restraining order, violation of an eviction order, and breaking and entering. We'll see him again in 5-10 years. Does the camera work at 100 feet in pitch black conditions? Yes. But a human pair of eyes was needed to resolve a man at night. The sony can see it w/o the help.

I bought both the bottom of the Q-see day/night camera line (this camera) and their mid-range unit (the 540 line resolution, 65 foot range for the night IR leds model Q-See QSB520SR Weatherproof Color High-Res Day/Night Camera Kit (540TVL) with 65-Feet Night Vision) I have them both hooked to a Q-see DVR recorder and there is a difference when I compare their pictures side by side on my DVR display. I hope these notes help people pick which one is best for their intended use.

This model is selling for $130 while the next step up listed above is $230 right now.

Pros ($130)

Cheapest day/night camera in q-see product lineup
LEDS provide a wide area of lighting that matches the lens field of view
Comes with a really long cable (100 feet+) and it runs power plus video
wide field of view lens covers a broad area without any fisheye distortion.
(cable is longer on this model than their more expensive model by about an extra 45 feet)

Cons ($130)

Lacks any zoom or focus control for the lens (present on the $230 version)
not as good of a mounting bracket as the $230 version
washed out picture compared to the Sony image sensor in the $230 camera
more picture noise at night compared to the Sony image sensor camera.
Less resolution than the $230 camera - picture is not as sharp

Summary -

I'm really nitpicking here - these are all small differences that separate the low end, mid range, and their high end camera (which amazon did not carry when I purchased them - the high end is just the mid range with higher power LEDS and a higher price tag in the $300's). All of them do what they say - they give you a picture day or night. Unlike other day/night cameras these provide color at night if enough light is present or black/white if using the LEDs. I prefer the color from the Sony image sensor, and I like the adjustable lens on the sony based camera. Is it worth another $100? That depends. Both cameras work well and do what they say - it's only when you put their pictures side by side that the quality difference is noticable.

I think both cameras have a use which is why I bought one of each and put them in different locations. If the tradeoff is quality vs. having more views of a building, then the less expensive camera wins because you can cover more doors and gates using them. On the other hand, if you already have Sony cameras in your security system, the extra $100 will make the q-see sony based mid-range model blend into your existing system better. Having a choice and knowing what you get or give up is important which is why we post reviews. I'm happy with both of my cameras in their applications and I won't change them out. If I buy another camera, I would consider it's use to decide which model to buy. The zoom lens on the $230 model q-see camera is nice for a long driveway, but a wide view of a close porch would probably best be served with one of the $130 models.

Great picture night and day. If you want to get a picture of the bad guys that will stand up in court this is the one to buy. I've tried the lower resolution cameras and you can't get a good picture of their face. The only reason I didn't give this camera 5 stars is because it needs the ability to sense when security lights are on. The low light camera feature only turns off in daylight and floodlights tend to wash out anything light in color like faces and license plates. I plan on adding more of these cameras to my Q See DVR system because I've found that one camera isn't enough . I only have one camera now and I just came home to find my passenger side window smashed on my car. The perpetrator manage to stay out of sight of the camera.

Ok heres the info that I was lookin for but had to find it the hard way. First off I was looking for a camera that had good range, clear picture and the ability to see clear at night. For the price this camera is well better than the others in the same range. In fact probably the all around best for the price. It offers a wider picture, A little bit more distance and a slightly clearer picture. But a fact you should know!!! I mounted this camera and with a day or so I caught my car getting robbed. The distance was about 30 to 40 feet and it was impossible to make out a face. The burglar stopped the car and the car was difficult to spot make model and accurate color but with some effort got it done. If your intention is to catch someone in the act and be able to prosecute them, upgrade to some better models. Spend the money. My things were still taken and all I can do now is watch it happen. Nothing else. I have tried all the cameras just about and all the different ranges. This is the best one but like I said before, you get what you pay for. Hope this helps.

I initially bought a 4 pack camera kit by Swann Pc Dvr Camera Kit 4CH, which includes 4 cameras, 100 feet of cable, 9V power supplies, and the PCI DVR card (which Q-See sells the same model PCI card).

I was really disappointed with the night vision of the small Swann cameras.

Here's a shot from the Swann camera during the day:

And a shot from the same angle with the Q-See QAC48030
http://www.flickr.com/photos/makotosan/3406336236/
Notice the color difference, and the wider angle with the Q-See.

Here's the Swann at night, you can see why I'm disappointed with the Swann and happy with the Q-See. The night-vision range is very short, good for about 10 feet, and the camera is about 20 feet from the driveway:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/makotosan/3405524361/

Here's the same shot from the Q-See, which is advertised at 100ft:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/makotosan/3405524535/

The light in the bottom left is on with both photos, it's just the slightly different position and wider angle of the Q-see that makes it visible.

The cable that came with it was about 60' and was a bit too short to reach my PC that is the DVR server. Fortunately, the 100' cables I had from the Swann kit allowed me to extend it.

Also, the BNC connector on the camera is thick, requires at least a 1\2" hole, so be preparted to drill a big hole for the wiring.

The manual (if you want to call it that) had no mounting instructions. Took me a minute to figure out how the pieces went together to mount it.

It also comes with no mounting screws so be prepared to get those on your own. Fortunately, I had some screws and anchors laying around that worked.

Overall, for the price, I am very pleased. MUCH better night vision compared to cheaper cameras, the color is also much better even at night.

I plan on switching out some of my other out-door Swann cameras with better cameras such as this one in the near future.

I have been experimenting with a few low-end security cameras. This is the most expensive camera I have tried, and also the best. It has a very sharp image during the day, and is also surprisingly sharp at night. At night it suffers some from glare on the lens caused by the numerous infrared LEDs. But still, the LEDs provide a lot of illumination which overall is a good thing. This camera is definitely a step up from the SVAT CV31 Hi-Res Outdoor CCD camera. It is both significantly sharper during the day, and significantly brighter at night. Also, it does not suffer from the pinkish cast I sometimes see in the SVAT image during the day. The Q-See is also a more compact design and feels more solid overall. I am especially amazed by the bright color images this camera provides just before dark and just after first light. After dark, the camera switches to a black and white image. One minor gripe about this camera is that the mounting hardware can make it hard to hang the camera from the eves or the rafters in a manner that is less obtrusive. I figured out an improvised solution after some experimentation, but it was not as easy or quick as I would have liked. I have also tried various X-10 cameras and those really compare poorly to this camera. Unless you are really strapped for cash, go with this camera over other cheaper cameras and you will probably not be disappointed.

32.) Works best in ambient light
Reviewed by: dreikatzen2004 Central Wisconsin
Rating:
I bought one of these last year, and just bought another. While the quality has gone down I am still going to give this camera 4 stars. I did some experimenting because I was disappointed with the image quality of the camera I just purchased, but I have found that the image quality changes with the light situation. If you have a dark/no light situation or only a few path lights in the area then the night image is going to be grainy and you will get ghosting around the image and see only about 40 feet. If you have ambient light - say a street light on the other side of a tree, or a nearly full moon then the image will be crystal clear and you should get the full distance out of it.

Like another reviewer, I have found that spiders build their webs on the camera. I go out from time to time with a swiffer taped to a broom handle and dust off the camera. If the spider builds a web you won't see anything except the web since the night camera will focus on it. It also trips the motion detect so you could end up with a lot of useless files if you are recording.

Installation was easy. I didn't want to do anything more then bore through a wall so I did what the power company did with their wires and I ran the cord along the siding with holders. Then I went through the wall and sealed it. The camera mount attaches with screws, the cords are easy to figure out.

Recommended.

33.) Good camera for the money
Reviewed by: Computer Guy
Rating:
I bought 4 of the QSC48030 cameras about a year ago to use with the Q-See 4-input pci card and there are good and not so good points.

Pros -
(1) All cameras have worked continuously for a year without any failures.
(2) The cameras use very little electricity so a good battery backup unit can keep them going for a very long time.
(3) The infrared night vision works fairly well out to about 80 feet
(4) The picture quality in the daylight hours and partial daylight is very good. At night you have the normal black and white look as expected.

Cons -
(1) Q-See customer service will respond back to an inquiry but don't ask them any real questions ... they may tell you anything.
(2) The cameras have no focus mechanism and so everything is not in sharp focus and a person needs to be fairly close to the camera to get a clear picture that the police could use.
(3) At night, you may see some concentric whitish circles on the outside edges (of the image on the computer) which makes it almost impossible to make out any details of anything in that area. That made a couple of the cameras lose about one third of the coverage. The Customer Service people indicated that condition is normal with no explanation as to why two of the cameras did not have the same problem. As I said, they may just tell you anything. I found that the problem is a buildup of a haze and oily substance on the inside of the protective glass across the lens and LED's. I unscrewed the cover (had to use a auto filter wrench on 3 of them) and cleaned the inside and outside of the glass and used compressed air to blow off the lint. That fixed the problem. So why didn't the factory "experts" know about that??
(4) The cables that come with the cameras are very fragile and I would suggest you buy your own to save the hassle of having to redo the work of running cables in the attic.

Overall for a budget priced system that gives a fairly good output these cameras work fine but if you want to be able to focus and pan, and get a sharp picture, you will need to pay a few hundred more for each camera.

The two cameras that I bought had different cables and adapters but they both work well. My only complaint is the glowing red IR rings that are a dead give away that I'm recording them. The qsee is a great all around camera and does an excellent job at night. I would estimate that you can clearly see objects 50-60 feet away in complete darkness, which I think is great for a cameras in this price range. Reviewed by: Upstate Photographer Troy, NY
Rating:
I bought two of these cameras, along with one each of two different Q-See cameras, and have been very happy with all of them.

One thing to note is that cameras like this, which feature IR illumination, don't work that great when mounted behind glass -- the reflection from the glass window can reflect the IR illumination back to the camera lens, and result in a hazy, indistinct image at night.

In my case, there is enough illumination from streetlights that i really don't need the IR, so I just unscrewed the lens, removed the IR circuit board, and everything is great. The camera can see in near-darkness without the help of IR illumination.

For my application, the lens isn't quite as wide as I would like -- Q-See has some other cameras with a wider lens -- but for many applications, the field of view is just fine.

Overall, a well-built camera well-sealed against the elements, with very high quality video, and a nice robust mount. And it has a serious, "don't mess with me" appearance that should give potential thieves or vandals the desire to move on to softer targets. Highly recommended.

42.) Regarding occlusion while under IR
Reviewed by: Steve G. Atlanta, GA USA
Rating:
@Gregg Cornett -- I experienced similar clouding under IR in one of my cameras. The fix was to clean it using a solution tailored for optics (just the cleaning agent and nothing else that leaves a residue) and lens tissue. The camera was restored to its original clarity. My theory is that this camera got misted over during a fogging period and subsequently dried leaving a fine residue on the face of the exterior glass. Incoming light would diffuse around it (like spots on one's glasses). Outgoing IR light would scatter and cause lens flair. When I say fine residue, I mean that it would appear clean to the naked eye.

This solution worked for me. YMMV

I've had two of these cameras for 14 months now. Camera #1 is not working 1/3 of each day, sometimes the image is black or almost black other times it has no signal. Camera #2 is still working but 1/2 of the night vision leds are out. Both cameras o-rings have developed gaps between the o-ring and the cover glass, the result is that the night vision led light leaks into the camera and causes a light ring at night. I have two other Q-see models, one has the same problem as Camera #1, and the other has the led/o-ring issue. So of the 4 Q-see cameras I have, none are working as they did when first installed, after only 14 months. The PC card and software are working fine.

I bought this Q-see camera to replace an old B&W Radio Shack camera that I've had by the front door for the past 10 years. Based on reviews here I got this model over the less expensive Q-see. I went to a color DVR card (Geovision GV-800) so I wanted to upgrade to a color camera with night vision since my front lamp goes off randomly at around 1 AM. I do like the extruded aluminum housing and the sturdiness of the bracket arm but I do wish they would have made a way to protect and conceal the wire.
To me, if I were "casing a joint" I think it would be easy to approach the camera from the side and just yank the wire out of it with a coat hanger or something. Maybe I'm just paranoid but a cable tucked away or in a conduit would be less prone to cutting.
So my main disappointment is the picture resolution. The field-of-view is a little tight, also. My old Radio Shack would encompass a much wider view. This lens is just a bit too narrow for my use.
Night vision is OK for what it is, didn't expext too much there as any IR illumination is going to be grainy and ghosted. Wish it had audio, too. I bought a mike for about five bucks and tucked it under the visor! Q-see could have added one for cheep!

How bizzare, though... the IR LEDs give off a faint red-orange glow that I've never seen on any of my other IR devices. Can you see the light from your TV remote?
So if you are looking for an inconspicuous camera at night, this is not it.
I'll keep it for now but look for something better. Some of the used color CCTV cameras I picked up on that auction site have a fantastic resolution compared to this Q-see but I'd have to house them in a big enclosure.

Bought this camera based on the reviews. It is much better than the cameras that were included with my Q-See DVR but while the images are clearer, Faces are still difficult to identify at a distance.Colors are a bit muted during the day, Nite vision is pretty grainy and I guess I'm getting about 50-60 of effective lighting with the LEDs but images at night are very poor. Maybe my expectations were too high as I've been using my webcam to monitor the front yard (Logitech 9000) and its images are very clear and you can easily see facial features during the day. Thought this cam would come close, but it didn't. I have it mounted about 15 ft. off the ground watching over my drive way so maybe just the presence of the camera will be enough to deter any evil doers.

I purchased this camera to round out the four slots on my DVR... I have 2 LTS cameras and an Alphasonic, I would say the night vision capability of the Q see is the same as the comparable Alphasonic ( both are inferior to the LTS ) The Q see did go up in less than 1/2 the time of the LTS though. That being said, my only real gripe with the Q SEE is that about once a week the darn thing goes scrambled... I cant really describe it in words but basically you loose signal and need to interrupt the power ( I just unplug then replug it) I wish it would actually cause a surge or something so that it would set off the alarm on my DVR so I could get it fixed in a timely manner.

Sept. 12, 2008

I have used this camera for about 2 weeks. It worked ok for about a week. I also purchased an expensive new TV monitor to use with this camera. The tv monitor shows big white / gray circles when I try to record on it at night. I am assuming the white / gray circles are the led lights on this camera lens. It made no difference in the picture quality even if I turned off the outside lights on my house!

The white circles block out a lot of what I am trying to record ... faces, vehicles, and neighborhood criminal activities.

It works ok for day time monitoring (only) but I would not recomend this camera for day or night recording. You CAN NOT identify faces, vehicles or anything else even if you are up close up to the camera!

I would send the camera back for a refund, but it has been painted white so it would blend in by the house and not be seen by people. I am VERY DISAPPOINTED in this camera! Don't waste your time or money buying this camera!

I called customer service and they informed me that since it was out of warranty there is nothing that can be done. I WAS TOLD I WOULD HAVE TO THROW IT AWAY AND BUY A NEW ONE...THAT THERE IS NO SERVICE ON THIS UNIT!

I bought this to replace another camera which was a few years old and not providing a sharp enough picture to distinguish any facial features to deal with acts of vandalism in my neighborhood. Because the two line connections on this camera are right next to this camera instead of at the DVR like my previous two cameras were, the installation was a series of ladder climbs and hole drilling to pull two connectors through the window frame. After all the effort, the picture is just as undistinguished as the camera I replaced and there was no benefit from spending $137 for this camera. My $49 first alert system produced clearer pictures with better facial recognition.
